How to Prepare Your Home Before the Cleaners Arrive

October 03, 2026

A little preparation makes a big difference. When surfaces are clear, the team spends its time scrubbing and polishing instead of moving piles of paper and toys. You do not need to clean before the cleaners come. You only need to make the home ready to be cleaned. This 10-minute checklist covers it.

1. Pick up the floors

Toys, shoes, cords, laundry and bags on the floor slow down vacuuming and mopping. A quick sweep with a laundry basket is enough.

2. Clear the counters and surfaces

Kitchen counters, bathroom vanities and tables should be free of loose items so they can be wiped, not just worked around. Put mail, dishes and personal items in a drawer or basket.

3. Put away valuables and private items

Cash, jewelry, medication, important documents and anything fragile or sentimental should be stored out of sight. This protects you and the cleaners.

4. Run the dishwasher and empty the sink

An empty sink and dishwasher mean the team can clean the sink, faucet and surrounding counter properly.

5. Plan for pets

  • Tell the company about pets before the visit.
  • Keep pets in a separate room, a crate, or with a family member during the cleaning if they are nervous or may slip out.
  • Put away pet food bowls and toys that are in the way.

6. Arrange access

Decide how the team will get in: you are home, a lockbox, a smart lock code, or a hidden key. Share parking instructions and gate codes ahead of time, especially in apartments and townhomes around Bellevue, Renton and Tacoma.

7. Tell us your priorities

Every home has areas that matter most. Maybe it is the kitchen, or a bathroom with hard-water buildup. Say so when you book, and mention anything not to touch, such as delicate finishes or items that cannot be moved.

8. Point out special surfaces and problems

If you have natural stone counters, unsealed wood floors or a stain you have tried to remove, mention it. The right method protects the surface.

What you do not need to do

  • You do not need to clean first. A team is there to do that.
  • You do not need to buy supplies, unless you prefer specific products.
  • You do not need to be home, if you have arranged secure access.

After the cleaning

Walk through when you get home. If something was missed, tell the company quickly so they can fix it. A good company welcomes the feedback. For the first visit, a deep cleaning is usually the best starting point, followed by recurring visits.
