Deep Cleaning vs Standard Cleaning: What's the Difference?
Many people book a standard cleaning and are surprised that the baseboards, the inside of the oven and the grout lines look the same afterward. That is not a mistake. Standard and deep cleaning are two different services, built for two different situations. Here is how to choose.
What a standard cleaning covers
A standard (maintenance) cleaning keeps a home that is already in decent shape fresh and tidy. It usually includes:
- Dusting reachable surfaces, furniture and decor.
- Vacuuming carpets and rugs, sweeping and mopping floors.
- Kitchen: counters, sink, stovetop, exterior of appliances, and wiping the microwave.
- Bathrooms: toilet, sink, mirror, shower and tub.
- Emptying trash and making beds on request.
What a deep cleaning adds
A deep cleaning is a slower, more detailed reset. It covers everything in a standard clean plus the places that build up grime over months:
- Baseboards, door frames, window sills and tracks.
- Inside the oven, refrigerator and microwave.
- Scrubbing soap scum, hard-water stains and grout lines.
- Cabinet fronts, light switches, vents and ceiling fans.
- Behind and under furniture that can be moved safely.
Which one do you need?
| Your situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| First time hiring a cleaner | Deep cleaning |
| Home cleaned regularly, looks good | Standard cleaning |
| It has been 3+ months since a thorough clean | Deep cleaning |
| Moving in or out | Move-in or move-out cleaning |
| Hosting guests or selling the home | Deep cleaning |
The smart combination
For most households the best value is a deep clean first, followed by standard recurring visits. The deep clean brings the home to a clean baseline. After that, each regular visit only has to maintain it, which is faster and easier to keep consistent. Once or twice a year, add another deep cleaning, often in spring and fall. Our recurring cleaning guide explains how to pick a schedule.
How long does each take?
A standard cleaning of an average home takes a couple of hours with a small team. A deep cleaning takes longer, often twice as long, because of the detail work. The exact time depends on the size and condition of the home, which is why a good company asks questions before it quotes. For what drives the final price, see how much house cleaning costs.
